Location: 1990 'Stud of Alter - Alter do Chão

The Portuguese State was the first creator of the Sorraia horse in addition to the family d'Andrade. Such an opportunity came after the restoration and maintenance in the Stud Farm of Alter of the misplaced effective Herdade da Agolada. Jose Luis d'Andrade, by transferring the animals to the estate of Font'Alva, wanted to give the stud farm offering four foals - Ruiva , Rabeca , Rio e Regalo - all mouse coat and born in 1975. It was from these animals that constituted the core of the National Stud, which changed location several times, but lived closed in on itself until 2001. From this year has resorted to Font'Alva homestead of stallions for mating free with their mares - Afogado (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004) and trombo (2005, 2006) - with very satisfactory results in terms of fertility. The National Stud has played an important role in creating Sorraias, putting at the disposal of other creators their stallions, on request. On the other hand, and more recently, it has been to give mares to different institutions - Agrarian School of Coimbra, Agrarian School of Santarém and Nature Reserve of Sorraia Horse - in order to diversify the breeding stock and thus allow the use of a wider range of studs each year reproduction, which would be impossible in practice of breeding freely over the actual remain in the same place. In all these centers have already occurred births, including the first result of artificial insemination in this race, following a project developed at the Agrarian School of Coimbra in partnership with the College of Agriculture of Santarém.

Currently this stud farm has 3 of the founding mares - Flausina, Ursula and Mimosa - and four stallions - Tadeu, Norte, Oceano and Ratão. In 2004 it was released to the mares a stallion given by the Quinta do Arripiado de Baixo- Terrorista (Opressor x Bonita), but that did not leave descendants in the herd of Sorraias. All stallions are assembled and, mostly engaged (Norte, Oceano and Tadeu). They will soon be used in a Tourism Nature company, with operations to start in 2006 to disseminate the Sorraia breed. Herdade Font'Alva

Herdade Font'Alva

Location: Barbacena - Elvas
Breeder: José Luís Vasconcellos e Souza d'Andrade

This place was chosen by de'Andrade family to receive animals raised in Herdade da Agolada, where they remain since 1976, after a short stay in Alter Stud Farm. It is the stud farm that holds most effective, with about three dozens of females, of which 16 are "mares", and a group of nine male "singles" living in freedom, the only one in the population of Sorraias. Since always in this stud was practiced the technique of riding free, after selecting a stallion group above. Notably, years ago in which fertility was 100%, and the effective increased rapidly. In a population genetics conservation perspective, this stud stallions has ceded to other creators, as well as having chosen to use a different stallion in consecutive years. It has a considerable number of animals exported to France, Germany, Mexico and recently to Brazil.

Quinta da Boavista

Quinta da Boavista

Quinta da Boavista

Location: Vale de Figueira - Santarém
Breeder: Manuel Mendes de Almeida Abecassis*e Madalena Abecassis

The breeding of Sorraias at Quinta da Boavista was due mainly to the great enthusiasm of Dr. Manuel Abecassis for this race, which acquired four females in 1985 - Água-pé e Pêga (baia fur), Chissana and Prisioneira (rat fur) - born in Herdade Font'Alva between 1978 and 1981. Used the National Stud stallions - Regalo and Rio - and from Andrade iron - Acabado - having the first product born in 1986. Later he introduced in eguada a stallion of its iron , Ilustre. Major drivers of coupling competition in Portugal, often engaged their Sorraia horses. All we delight with the allure of the car display drawn by two pairs of Sorraias - Lobo, Lince, Lacado and Lírio, admirably led by Madalena Abecassis. This stud is also responsible for the dissemination of the Sorraia horse abroad, having sold animals to Mexico, Belgium and Germany. In 2002, Madalena Abecassis got rid of all effective, four females - Fibrar, Lolita, Fofinha and Tota - and foal - Qual –definitely passing the testimony to two new breeders.
